“NONE ARE MORE HOPELESSLY ENSLAVED AS THOSE WHO FALSELY BELIEVE THEY ARE FREE” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
Like most people raised and still living in the United States in 2010, I have always considered myself to be “free”. Afterall, I enjoy so many cherished freedoms, like the right to vote, worship as I wish, live where I want…….and even leave the country if I desire.
However, as I have gotten older, I have come to rethink what being “free” really means.
Are we really as “free” as we believe we are…. in the first place?
If so, is this as good as “freedom” gets?
Or is there an even a higher level of freedom out there – if we open our minds to it?
What’s triggered me to question what being “free” actually means …….is the sad fact that despite all the freedoms and choices our country has to offer, millions of Americans have become enslaved by their own lives.
They don’t own their lives – their lives own them.
Specifically, the stuff they own, and the pace they run to obtain that stuff….owns them. And most of this stuff….. is stuff they want, not stuff they need.
I know this, because I used to be one of those people. And still am to a certain degree.
How and why do most of us fall prey to this deceptive form of enslavement?
Jim Merkel knows. And he is enlightening people:
